This is the first episode in a three-part series on emergency preparedness and response in long-term care. Recent hurricanes affecting the United States have brought to light the importance of health care providers devising a plan to safeguard human resources, maintain business continuity, and protect physical resources in an emergency. Providers participating in the Medicare program are required to satisfy seventeen specific categories of emergency preparedness, which will take effect this November 15, 2017. Under these new requirements, providers must hold two testing exercises of the emergency preparedness plan on an annual basis.
