In the fifth episode of our series on the national opioid crisis, Hilary Bowman discusses the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) role in regulating individuals and entities handling controlled substances, including opioids. 

Specifically, the episode explains the impact of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016 (CARA) and recent rulemaking on access to maintenance and detoxification treatment administered by physicians and midlevel practitioners. The episode also highlights the responsibilities of all DEA registrants to safeguard controlled substances, maintain records, and report suspicious activity to the DEA.
